A Chinese plate painted in the Wanli style with cobalt blue approximating Wanli blue. There is wear and age on this plate but we believe the plate was from late Qing Dynasty (19th C) rather than mark and period.
The design is of farmers and people in a small town by a river or lake. There are buildings, trees, bamboo, half-moon bridges, and boats. The designs are very similar to Wanli, but a bit busier than would be typical from that period. This is another reason why we feel it’s later.
A shallow cavetto with large center area porcelain plate that has an unglazed cut foot ring. The base is glazed. The glaze has a smooth, unctuous, worn feel and has a bluish tinge. The glaze is shiny in appearance and has had good glaze control stopping just above the foot ring. The cobalt blue is that pretty shade of cobalt which matches Wanli blue. There are areas in the cobalt that look like the black of cobalt explosions. The painting is very fine and extensive.
The plate is of medium weight; it isn’t either super thinly nor thickly potted.
There is the four character mark of the Wanli emperor in cobalt on the base.
Please note that we have another nearly matching plate in our shop, ID Por-1700 (you can search by the number or the word “Wanli”). If you’re interested in purchasing both plates, we can give you a good deal for the pair.
MEASUREMENTS 8 ½” (21.6 cm) diameter x 15/16” (2.4 cm) tall. Weighs 14.2 oz (405 g)
CONDITION There are tiny rim frits and a small rim chip. There is wear in the form of abrasions and small irregular scratches on the central area of the plate, but there are no cracks or breaks. The plate rings true and the plate looks very good for its age. There are kiln flaws such as; dimples, pin holes in the glaze, and blue smudges underneath. There is a craze in the glaze on the rim but it doesn’t go through to become a crack. A well painted and hand potted plate with a depiction of Chinese life.
