A nice-sized, very old wooden lidded box coated in a dark lacquer and with a carved design in the top of lid.
The lid is a raised rhomboid shape with sloping sides. The box mouth and lid mouth have flanges that fit together. The base has been lacquered but has worn spots showing a light colored wood. It is a slab construction with small round nails holding it together. The interior of the lid and box are also lacquered. The interior smells of smoke and candle wax. It may have once held candles.
10 ½” (26.7 cm) long x 5 ½” (14.0 cm) deep x 6 5/8” tall. Weighs 1 lb 15.7 oz (895 g)
The box has a rich, aged patina. There is wear to the lacquer, particularly along the edges, inside the flange of the lid, and along the base. There are no cracks or breaks. Some of the joints have pulled away slightly, but still intact.
A great box for display or even to still use. It will add substance and an aged richness to a room.
