A dark bronze Japanese usabata flower arranging vessel with silver inlays of two small shore birds flaying over reeds.

The heavy cast bronze Usabata is in two pieces. The base rests on three feet in the shape of elephant heads. The two handles look like two vines extending from the shoulders. These handles are attached to the body with pins. Silver wire has been inlaid in a pattern of reeds, water and a net to catch waterfowl. Two small water birds were inset to complete the design. The top portion is a large flat disk with a raised rim and a well in the center. This well is inserted into the base.
The exterior of the vessel has a dark applied finish.

Provenance: From the estate of Dr Robert Hale Ellis of Portland, Oregon during his regular visits to China and Japan as a physician during the first quarter of the 20th Century.
