Large, colorful, intricate pattern of a phoenix that is a work of art. The labor intensive design with borders of chrysanthemum is amazing.
A thin brass large shallow bowl/plate is covered inside and out with black, iron red, pale blue, dark blue, yellow, turquoise, purple, white, pink, and lavender glass enamels in a complex design. The colors were separated by thin brass wire cells. The artist has even gradated the colors, especially on the phoenix feathers and tail. The artistry is very fine with many tiny details on the phoenix.
The mouth rim is the base brass. The charger has a shallow foot with the exposed brass showing. The back has a aquamarine cloisonné design like fish scales. The base is enameled. There is a Japanese character on the base.
11 ¼” (28.6 cm) diameter x 1 ½” (3.8 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 11.6 oz (780 g)
There are some tiny enamel losses on the front near the rim and a few larger pieces missing on the back rim. There are wear scratches on the central well. The charger still looks intact and vibrant. The enamels are still very bright and rich.
A colorful, exotic work of art from the Meiji period that will show off well and add richness to the décor.
