Chinese folk art hand carved head for a puppet that has much hand work and expertise.
A single block of wood that has been carved in the shape of a man’s head. The face has been painted. The top of the head is undecorated and may have had a wig or hat. There are tool marks from the carving visible on the head top. The base of the head has drips of paint and would have been covered with clothing fabric. There is a deep hole carved in the top of the head and a hole at the base for attachment to the rest of the body.
6 ¼” (15.9 cm) tall x 3 ½” (8.9 cm) deep x 3 ½” (8.9 cm) wide. Weighs 9.3 oz (265 g)
There is a wood chip off one ear. The wood has cracked behind the ear on one side and on the top of the head. There are paint losses throughout. The painting looks like it was touched up many years ago because you can see fainter painting underneath near one sideburn and a slightly different color white paint at the base. Saying that, the head has character and shows age.
A folk art piece that gives pleasure from the artistry of the puppet maker. A great figural piece.
