Fun, well carved, needle case made from horn, with white eyes and black pupils. The utilitarian object has become a work of folk art.
A lathed piece of horn (probably cow or water buffalo) has been finished with hand carving in the shape of a fish with scales, fins, mouth, and eyes. There are white, maybe mother of pearl discs with black pupils for the eyes. The head comes off as it has ridges to screw into the base. The base is well hollowed to hold implements, probably for sewing. The finish has a shiny, smooth black lacquer like coating.
4 1/2” (11.4 cm) long x 1” (2.5 cm) thick x 1” (2.5 cm) tall. Weighs 1.6 oz (45 g)
There is slight wear to edges like on the fins which show the wood beneath the finish. There are no cracks, chips, or breaks. The artist has taken license giving the fish nostrils.
An unusual, whimsical, unique piece of folk art. I love the smile on the fish.
