A very detailed, well rounded, carving of a figure holding a mask while a mythical beast is on the back.
A carving with two holes to attach to an Inro that has a very soft polished well-worn finish. The figure is seated with a mask in the lap. There is basket weave on the back with a turtle head near the top. The carving is very fine and even shows the turtles’ face.
We have not positively identified the material used. When looking at the couple of broken areas (see condition below) you can see cleavage where pieces break off, as well as tiny reflective specs. This appears to be from mineralization. The material has a low density. Our best guess is that it’s fossilized wood.
MEASUREMENTS 1 3/4” (5.4 cm) tall x 1 ¾” (4.4 cm) wide x 1 3/8” (3.5 cm) deep. Weighs 1.3 oz (35 g)
CONDITION One of the figure’s feet is missing and an object being held by the figure is partially missing.
A old well-carved Netsuke made from an unusual material to add to a collection. It has so much character.
