Antique Chinese red and white Peking overlay glass snuff bottle with crane and pine motif 19th century
A deeply cut and well-rounded carved cased glass Chinese snuff bottle with auspicious symbols of cranes and pine trees. The rich Chinese red carved cranes and pines stand out in contrast with the milky white base glass.
A circular body with shallow neck of milky white glass has been layered with a Chinese red layer of glass. This top layer was carved out with a design of a crane in a pine tree and on the back with a crane flying. The mouth has a ring of red glass thus crowning the top of the bottle. The base has a red foot which merges into the twisting trunk of an aged pine tree. The pines symbolize a friend in winter and a symbol of longevity. There are a pair of cranes and these symbolize marriage piety and longevity. The bottle feels very soft and smooth in the hand. The artist took much time and care in making sure that the white of the base glass is smooth and well-polished.
There is a translucent stone cap that looks like a pale green jade. You can see inclusions in it. The cap feels cold to the touch. The cap is missing the spoon. The cap fits the top of the bottle perfectly and under a light it glows from within.
MEASUREMENTS 2 1/8” (5.4 cm) long x 1 1/8” (2.9 cm) wide x 2 5/8” (6.7 cm) tall. Weighs 2.5 oz (70 g)
CONDITION The edges and highlights of the red top layer of glass have softened and smoothed from wear. There is a tiny chip at the base foot ring in the red glass. It looks like it is part of the pine tree trunk. You feel it more than see it. There is a chip under the snuff bottle cap on the top. You don’t see it when the cap is on.
A bottle that has a great feel in the hand. It has a deep carving but the carving is smooth and well rounded. The crane and pine motif is classic Chinese and shows the artistry of the carver.
