A detailed, well carved work of folk art of a fisherman with a fantastic fish tail. Even his mouth has teeth both upper and lower carved in.
A tight grained wood that has been stained dark. Worn spots show lighter colored wood. The opening and closing of the jaws shows great ingenuity and detailed precise carving. The carving of the face is exacting and artistic having good depth and showing good expression. The man has a hat with tassel and a wide collar. The handle at the back tapers and the front handle has been carved with a fish tail at the end.
8” (20.3 cm) tall x 3 1/8” (7.9 cm) deep (when closed) x 2” (5.1 cm) wide. Weighs 5.6 oz (160 g)
There is a repair to a tip of the tail. There is a small chip on the beard and a tiny one around the mouth. There are two small nicks on the front hat edge. There are tiny wear marks here and there, particularly around the mouth where it was, of course, used to crack nuts. The piece looks entire and has a good patina from age.
A great piece of detailed and imaginative folk art.
