1920s boudoir lamp has a 4" tall china half doll that sits atop an attached bell-shaped wire cage over its original porcelain socket secured at the base. Complete lamp stands 10-1/2" tall. Made by Karl Schneider, and wearing a powdered wig, the German doll's expression is very detailed with highlights to the pupils in her eyes, and nostrils and eyelids delineated in red. Her arms are away from her body at the elbows, coming back to rest on her bosom, allowing her tiny rose-trimmed shawl to wrap around her shoulders and weave through her arms. The 90 year old half doll wears her original outfit, a rich dusty pink silk, that over the years has faded and grayed to a much more muted gray-brown hue. The most accurate color is shown in the second photo. She probably spent much of her life out of the limelight, as the dust and soil on her dress hid the beautiful passementerie trim on the skirt edges. A bit of the shine peeks through so that we can see a glimpse of the once elegant gown. Though the doll herself is in excellent condition (with the attendant flecks sometimes found on old china dolls and a tiny chip where wire attaches to the cage on the under side), her garb has two tiny holes in the skirt: one hidden directly under the top skirt, and the other on the right lower front skirt. Soil is the issue. I'm not sure the dress could be dry-cleaned. Though it is sturdy enough to withstand further duty, the original costume was kept for historical purposes, and if you want to refurbish her, everything is original to the lamp. The silk wrappings on the wires of the metal cage in the same color as her dress are disintegrating, and the lamp's frayed cord has lost its plug, making it necessary to rewire for use. Most of these boudoir lamps are missing their original clothing, so it is a real find when you find one still clad in her original gown. I can find no maker's mark but she is shown in Marion and Werner's 1979 book, "The Collector's Encyclopedia of Half-Dolls". I have owned her for 50 years. It is time to allow someone else to enjoy her. Thank you for visiting.
