This very large linen book, "Animal Friends", was printed by the Saalfield Publishing Company, Akron, Ohio, in 1915. Printed in greens, grays, yellows and blues, the 14 page book is clean, and retains its color, though a bit faded. Measuring 13-3/4" x 10", the nearly 100 year old book has charming illustrations. Both front and back covers show a mare and its colt, but turn the page, and it shows Mary, of nursery rhyme fame, with her little lamb. The verse at top says, "Mary had a little lamb, So cute and tame was he, He'd eat the morsels from her hand; She was so kind, you see." Goats, a squirrel, bunnies and sheep follow on the next few pages with their own verses. Three darling kittens come next with their verse at the bottom: "Just arrived by Parcel Post, tiny travelers, one, two, three, Far away from off the coast; They are cute as cute can be". Among other pages with the cattle, piggies and donkey, is a picture of a little boy riding a pony with his sister and dog along side. Its verse says, "Hold on tightly, Sister Jane: Careful Dear, don't slip! Now we're off down through the lane. What a merry trip!" Next page shows a big sister reading to her little brother and family dog: "Now, dear brother, after me - A, B, C, D, E, F, G. That was fine! Now H, I, J. Bright indeed, Mama will say. K, L, M, N, O and P. Why, we're doing great, you see! Careful, now - Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z." Next to last page shows "Little Betsy on the way to have her picture taken. Leave her kittens home? Not she! No, No! They'd feel forsaken." Front cover is marked, "The Saalfield Publishing Company, Akron, O., Copyright 1915". Back cover says, "Saalfield's Muslin Books, Never wear, never tear. Saalfield 801, Made in USA". Frayed at top and bottom, the book's vertical edges are folded. Illustrations are so delightful, it would be tempting to frame them for a child's room! This would make a great addition to your collection. Thank you for looking.
