To be honest, I am not sure what this is for.
It is an unusual brass handled wire implement which has bent ends on the bottom of the bell shape.
A sliding flat piece lifts the wires into a closed or wide open position, so the ends can grab and gather something.
At least, this is what I think.
Would appreciate some input if someone knows exactly what this is for.
It is very neat and a nice looking brass implement.
I received information from a Ruby Lane watcher who supplied this information:
Your unusual tool ( wires that open and close with a bracket to
determine diameter) is actually a "bonnet" for a circular
knitting machine. It is used to "hang" the stitches/loops to
begin knitting - the loop at the end on which the bracket slides
would have held a weight to provide tension as the knitting grew.
Thank you Wendy
Condition: A bit of age discoloration on the metal, but works well.
Size: 6 3/8 inches high.
