This is a wonderful item.
It is circa 1810 and consists of a hand painted lady's head and shoulders in profile, and 13 cut paper overlays of different outfits.
When the overlays are placed over the head, different portraits are formed.
The overlays are cut out and hand painted to represent various characters, or people in history.
These are: Virgin of the Sun, Polish Dress, Nun, Indian Dress, Parish Girl, Circa... Lady, Turkish Dress, Old English Dress, Mary Queen of Scots, Vandyke Dress, Russian Dress, Gypsy Woman, and Bohemian Dress.
The one with the dots after I cannot quite read.
These descriptions are hand written in lovely writing with the s as an f in some cases as they did in late 18th early 19th century.
All are hand painted and form a lovely early changeable paper doll.
The folder is old manila paper.
A rare and lovely item.
Condition: Some age wear to the paper and a bit of foxing , but overall very good. The folder has split seams.
Size: Each piece is 4 by 4 inches.
