A very lovely antique sampler with rare drawn thread work corners. Each corner is different, with the pulled threads making different designs on the very fine linen material.
The stitch work is done in an extremely fine silk and has motifs of sailing ships, birds, peacocks, a whale, a lobster, and a very unusual verse. The top of the sampler has a shield with a ship and a cross. The piece must have been done by a family with a sailing, or whaling history.
It would be fascinating to to research the three children named on the sampler. Beautiful, unusual, and rare. Undated, but definitely 19th century.
Unusual hexagonal frame, which may have been on a pole screen originally.
Condition: Bit of minor staining on the linen material, otherwise, very nice. Mounted on an acid free backing.
Size: Sight size- 15 1/4 X 12 1/2 inches.
Frame- 16 3/4 X 13 3/4 inches.
