This sterling silver bolo tie with sterling tips is marked Effie C. Zuni for Effie Calavaza, who started making jewelry in the 1950's. Her husband Juan Calavaza, the well-known Zuni silversmith who originated the techniques and style used in making this kind of tie, taught his wife how to make them in the 1950's . She and her daughters have been making jewelry ever since, and this tie shows her usual methods of construction. The base has been sand or tufa cast and decorated with hand-stampings and silver balls, and it's also decorated with two of her well-known snake figures, which are symbols of many positive things in the Zuni culture. The tie is also set with five cabochons of high-quality matched turquoise, and the snake has little round turquoise eyes as well. On this tie, each tip features a snake figure and two pieces of the same beautiful turquoise, which is also characteristic of some of her bolos. This tie is in very good condition and no damage or problems.
The centerpiece of this bolo measures 2 1/2 inches tall by 1 3/4 inches at its widest point, and the tie is 36 inches long, not including the tips, which are each 3 1/2 inches long. This classic tie would be suitable for either a man or a woman to wear, and any bolo lover would be happy to add an authentic Effie C. piece such as this one to their collection!
