16 x 12 inch Record of Birth and Baptism, used to register a birth in Marion County, Ohio, in 1863. The blank was printed and sold by Theo. F. Scheffer of Harrisburg, PA. The certificate is in a Black Forest style crisscross frame that measures 21 x 17 inches.
The certificate itself bears the title, "RECORD OF BIRTH & BAPTISM" (in English), and has representations of saints and/or biblical figures as its main decoration. The figures are embellished with overprinted blocks of color in yellow, blue, red and green. The certificate has a printed frame within which there are religious themed verses and uniquely American symbols, such as eagles. The certificate is in very good condition for its age, with only a couple of small losses to the top edge of the paper, which has mellowed to a light beige tone. There are otherwise no folds or tears in the paper. The back of the page is more darkly aged, and has been in contact with an old hand-sawed board that forms the back of the frame.
The frame is in excellent condition and has what looks like old, rippled, glass. The cut out leaves on the corners all are present.
The framed piece weighs about 3 and a half pounds before packaging.
We have transcribed the verses on the certificate (they run many lines), and can make them available upon request.
