A beautiful and striking Victorian crescent moon brooch circa 1880. Although originally intended as a mourning jewel, this brooch is far from sombre, its snug row of lustrous, graduated seed pearls lining a rich gold crescent set into highly polished black onyx. If anything, the sleek, carved onyx accentuates the combined radiance of the gold and seed pearls. It has a timeless quality that draws the eye and is the kind of special piece that will enhance either smart or casual wear. The gold content front and back tests to at least 9 carat.
It is in lovely condition for its age with a little darker discolouration around the fittings on the rose gold backing plate. The hinged pin and 'c' clasp work perfectly.
A gorgeous antique brooch, it measures approximately 27mm (1 1/16") across, the thickest part of the crescent measuring 9mm (over 5/16") wide.
