A stunning antique Victorian Bohemian garnet cluster brooch in a star design, circa 1890. This is a large piece, set all over with both round rose-cut and faceted pear-shaped pyrope garnets of carefully selected sizes in a glorious rich, deep blood red. The brooch is slightly domed and constructed in three tiers to display the full beauty of the garnets and intensify their vivid, saturated colour, likened to 'glowing coals'. My photos don't begin to capture this incredibly sumptuous effect! I acquired the brooch as set in 'low carat gold', but have not had the metal tested to confirm this. To me, the back has the look of silver with a subtle gold wash, which would also have been typical of high-quality garnet brooches of this period. It fastens securely on the back with a hinged pin and curly 'c' clasp.
This gorgeous antique brooch has, I believe, one tiny garnet missing which is extremely hard to spot, as it is almost entirely overhung by a pear-shaped garnet of the middle tier. I've tried to show it close-up from an angle in the last photo, as in any normal viewing you just wouldn't notice it. Otherwise the piece is in really lovely condition for its age and measures 45mm (1 3/4") in diameter.
