An exquisite late Victorian bar brooch in 15 carat gold (marked '15ct' on the reverse). Inspired by nature, the design features a leafy flowering stem with three diamond 'buds' twining gracefully around a branch of coral in a warm, light pink. The stem is finely detailed to show veining and texture on the leaves. To my eye, this glowing combination of gold and pink coral looks utterly magical with the sparkling diamonds.
Rounded finials decorate the cylindrical gold bar at either end and the brooch fastens securely with 'c' clasp and strong pin on the reverse. It also has the added security of a fitted gold safety chain. The pin itself has a slightly different colour and may not be gold.
There is a small spot of damage to the gold casing of the lower part of the stem which is hardly noticeable when worn but best seen where I have tilted the brooch in photo 4. Otherwise this beautifully crafted brooch is in lovely condition for the age. It measures 45mm x 15mm (1 3/4" x 5/8") approx.
It comes in what may be the original box of R.T. Barfoot & Co., watchmakers and jewellers who operated in North St., Brighton, England as early as the 1860s.
