Rare snake bone Native American Hopi necklace. I couldn't even find any information on it, since there were none to be found. A friend of mine took a trip to Arizona and brought this necklace back for me knowing I love unusual pieces. She had bought it on a reservation. That was some 45 years ago. This necklace is un-dyed and measures 30 inches.
The snake dance is a very sacred ceremony performed by the Hopi tribes in the villages of Shungopavi and Mishongnovi on Second Mesa. The village of Walpi no longer performs the dance. I don't know if this had anything to do with the dance, but again, I didn't find anything on it. I did see two contemporary necklaces online made by the Hopi that were bits of imported python bones, with a majority of the necklace in rock. These were being sold for $275 and $575.
