This exquisite antique brooch is carved from pre-ban ivory in the 1800s. It's amazingly hand-carved from a single piece of elephant tusk. The openwork design features two pheasants or birds amid an incredible profusion of ivy leaves and delicate vines that swirl around a graceful frame. The mossy foliage background makes this a fabulous three dimensional brooch. I can only imagine the hours of work and steady hands it must have taken to finish with such a truly superb one of a kind piece of art. I have heard that this type of memento was made for men that went to Africa on game hunts as something to take back to their wives. A grand museum piece worth every penny. Measures 2" x 1.8" x 1/4"
Condition: The pin is turned up a little at the end, but it does not snag and is the only flaw to the entire piece. When I first saw the brooch I thought one of the legs was broken off, only to discover it at the back, hiding from the front view.
Note: At present we are looking in to getting the appropriate state and federal documentation and certificates required by law for commercial sale, import or export, have been obtained for this antique item. Proper legal paperwork will be included with it at shipment.
