Silver mythical cockatrice dragon griffin pin.
There are many folklore stories in circulation about the cockatrice from China and Japan, to Greece and England that date back to the 1500s. The cockatrice is said to be a two legged dragon or serpent like creature with wings that had a death dealing stare and could blow flames of fire. This sterling silver pin has another strange animal riding its back. Its total length is 2.25 inches. This was one of the delightful pins we bought in a collection of like pins made with curled and twisted sterling strings. The style of closure and hinge date it to the early 1900s, or possibly the late 1800s. Very unusual piece that we have never seen before.
