Bakelite Indian Totem Pole Brooch Carved and Painted Book Piece
The cowboy and Indian Western movies of the 1930s and 40s were so popular their influence was felt even in the fashion world. Women loved the cheery colors of carved Bakelite that was painted up to depict Western motif. This 3.25 inch totem pole is a very rare find, as most collectors who are fortunate to have one in their personal collection don't let them go. Unfortunately, this fact is reflected in the price as well (we do have layaway). We are super excited to have a wooden totem pole pin to offer as well. Get them both for a set that is sure to bring you years of compliments.
So, which came first, the carved wood figural jewelry or the carved Bakelite? According to Schiffer's book Wooden Jewelry and Novelties, the raw materials used in manufacturing plastics was dwindling as it was used for provisions for the troops during the war years. So the bright and witty designs of Bakelite came first, and were so delightful they were extensively repeated in novelty wood creations. The wooden totem pole shown in the final photo is also available for sale as item #2212-1.
