Chinese Foo Dog figures purple synthetic sapphire gold sterling mens ring. For the man (or women) who only 'thought' they had everything - here is a purple and blue synthetic sapphire ring made of sterling, and yellow gold that is at least 10kt. The emerald cut Oriental sapphire is an estimated 5 carats. It has the coloring of amethyst, but in sunlight you see flashes of blue. The ring is a size 8.75, and the sterling is topped with an intricate gold Foo Dog on each side, as well as gold bezel holding the stone.
There is an interesting story behind this ring. A Chinese man here in the States owned a Chinese restaurant. He had this ring custom made for himself in China. Since the Ming Dynasty the guardian lion, called Foo Dogs in the West, are believed to have powerful mystic protective benefits. Usually seen in pairs, as is the case on this ring, they are a sign for the elite and wealthy. The man ended up having to close his restaurant, and apparently disenchanted with the belief, let the ring go as well.
Condition: Good - Shows heavy wear with a slight chip in one of the corner facets (not sharp) and some flea bites in the stone, but looks much better in person (I've hardened some photos to accentuate flaws). The beveling also shows extensive wear, but still holds the stone well. Sale price reflects condition issues, but in no way suggests that this is not a beautiful, one-of-a-kind ring that the new owner will be proud to wear.
