Georgian Limoges portrait pendant: hand painted Cameo gold griffin blue porcelain. Beautiful hand painted Georgian portrait cameo is an excellent example of early French Limoges 1800s porcelain artwork. The early pieces that were not meant for export were never marked, as is the case with this piece. The hand painted royal blue background sets off the porcelain flesh tone skin of a Roma cameo. The painting is so intricate that the hair has strands of curls. The helmet has a 24K gold griffin painted on its side. This is such a rare piece of fine jewelry that I can't find anything like it in my reference library. Cameo measures 2.25 inches.
Originally a gold-filled brooch set with a tube pin closure which is long gone. It looks like it was replaced near the same time period it was made with a top ring to hold a chain, making it into a necklace. The chain, which is 22 inches, has a tube and tongue closure from the same period as the cameo.
Condition: Very good - A little thinning to the blue at the bottom and a dimple in the porcelain on the upper check, otherwise there is not so much as a scratch on it. (White patches are from flash.)
