This coal scuttle is superior quality, made of walnut with elegant brass fittings and attention to detail.
The door is attached to the top with a brass hinge that extends along the entire width, giving it extra sturdiness. The door has a decorative raised panel with carved flutes and a very nice cast brass knob. The top has incised lines for decoration and a fancy ball turned handle with cast brass supports. The sides of the scuttle are curvilinear at the top.
The inside has its original handmade coal “bucket” made out of galvanized steel with folding handles at the sides, one of the handles is now missing.
The back side has a brass bracket that holds the original cast iron & wood shovel. The cast iron is in great shape, but the wood has shrunken a little.
The bottom of the scuttle has some writing in white chalk that I can’t decipher, perhaps from the person who made it?
Measures 17” deep from the front to back at the widest point, the shovel adds another 1 1/2” (making it 18 1/2” deep) x 13” wide across the front, x 12” high at the highest point of the side
In nice condition with some shrinkage to the wood leaving slight gaps at the joints; one of the swing handles of the liner is missing.
