A set of 12 elegant bone china 8 3/4” plates by Royal Doulton with cream-colored rims decorated with an intricate raised gold design of urns and flower baskets.
The well of the plate is white and encircled with a 1/4” band of solid tooled gold. The outer rims are lined in heavy gold and the foot of each plate (on the underside) is also lined in gold. They are finest quality and very impressive!
The plates are stamped with the green Royal Doulton Lion mark used between 1902-1922, and in red “Spaulding & Co./Chicago & Paris”. Each also has the pattern number “HB9488 & E9960” written by hand in black and impressed “3 17”. Maybe 3/1917 is the production date?
About Spaulding & Co.:
Henry Spaulding was Tiffany & Co.’s European representative ca 1871 until the 1880s. He tried to convince Tiffany to open a store in Chicago, Spaulding’s home town. When Tiffany declined, Spaulding opened his own Chicago Tiffany-like establishment in the 1880’s as well as a store in Paris. Spaulding & Co., like Tiffany, sold only the finest quality merchandise.
These plates are in lovely condition and don’t look like they have been used much, if at all. There is a slight bit of wear on the underside/base to the gold edged rim where the plate touches whatever it sits on, but this obviously doesn’t show. One plate has a small & slight glaze surface scratch (1") in the well, but I had to search to find this.
