Extraordinary hand made Chinese Art Deco wool rug in beautiful colors with an outstanding asymmetrical design of flowers, lanterns and butterflies. Central color is best described as deep rose or bright magenta and the outer band is a perfectly complimentary taupe. The flower design is incredibly varied in pattern and color, meandering through the central field of the rug and crossing into the taupe border.
The wool of the rug is dense, thick, plush and beautiful. The warp is cotton with a woven cotton area at each end finished in tied fringe. One end of the cotton warp is stamped on the back in black letters in the manner in which Walter Nichols signed his rugs. However, the writing is worn and I can't decipher what it says (please see the last picture). There is also a fabric tape label stapled at one corner, but the writing is also faded away on it.
This beautiful rug belonged to my husband's Grandfather and has always been in his family. We think it was purchased new for their L.A. home in the 1930's.
13 ft 7 inches (163") at the longest with fringe x 9 ft 9 inches (117") wide. The design part of the rug, without the fringe, measures 159" (13 ft 3inches) long.
There are no odors and it comes from a pet free home. There is wear to the fringe, but this has not advanced to any design loss in the rug. The fringe is worn at one side of the rug on both ends. probably where people entered and left the room. Please see the second to last picture.
This rug has never been folded, is really too thick and heavy to fold, and will be shipped rolled.
I am not a rug expert, so please email with any questions.
