This is a lovely pair of shakers completely covered in 22Kt gold with gorgeous birds and flowers embedded in the gold. They both have cork insets to hold the spice inside. They stand 3 ¾ inches and the base is 1 ¾ inches wide. Although not marked, I am confident that this set of shakers was decorated by The Wheeling Decorating Company of Wheeling, West Virginia. The décor on these shakers is an identical match to a set of sugar bowl and creamer, which is marked by The Wheeling Decorating Company. The bottom of both shakers is hand marked "12".
The Wheeling Decorating Company of Wheeling, West Virginia, was one of the outstanding companies that decorated china, pottery and porcelain during the first half of the 20th century. This company often referred to as WDCO or Wheeling, decorated items (purchased blanks) from more than 500 companies around the world. The wide range of designs used by Wheeling is the work of a team of skilled craftsmen who sometimes added the Wheeling logo to their pieces, but often did not. They worked from 1879 to about 1923.
