LR 440 Hearts Cup Plate by the Boston & Sandwich Glass CoLR 440 Hearts Cup Plate by the Boston & Sandwich Glass Co

Give the gift of love with the Valentine heart cup plate probably made by Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. Not only will you be giving a romantically decorated cup plate, but you will be giving them a small piece of American history.

Cup plates were very popular from the 1826 into the 1850's in America. They performed many purposes, as a coaster for a tea cup; they helped prevent tables from being marred, and also kept the table linen clean, and acted as a cooling medium to the hot cup of tea.

LR 440 was made near the peak of the lacy period and is in the chapter "The Heart Group" in the book "American Glass Cup Plates" by Ruth Webb Lee and James H. Rose. The photograph is on page 259 and the description is on page 268. The diameter is 3 1/2"; there are 53 even scallops around the rim, with only 1 chipped piece. Two hearts with two arrows are the center piece, surrounded by flowers and lyres. A small black spot is visible on close inspection, but otherwise I would consider this piece in good condition.

Considering the age of this piece of history and that this item served a purpose please expect some wear on the rim and edge.
