The Royal Doulton Company was an English company producing collectables and tableware since 1815. The quality of their products has been compared to Spode, Wedgwood and Minton, and they had quite a reputation in "The Potteries" (Stoke-on-Trent). Three of its brands were Royal Doulton, Royal Albert and Minton; which are now owned by WWRD Holdings Ltd (Wedgwood, Waterford, Royal Doulton) near Stoke-on-Trent.

Toby Jugs have been around since the early 18th century, but they were revived by Doulton in the 19th century. It was Charles Noke who developed the idea into a range of character jugs. He envisioned a more colorful and stylish jug based on the head and shoulders of a character rather than the full figure. He had in mind characters from English song, literature, history and legend, designed to appeal to future generations. It took him almost ten years to be satisfied with the standards of design and production, but in 1934 the first character jug was launched. To-date it has included more than 300 different subjects in a huge variety of sizes and shapes (including teapots and toothpick holders). This makes quite a challenge in collecting and keeps it very exciting.

This particular jug is called "Gaoler" which was created in 1962. The "Gaoler" is the keeper of a jail. His name is imprinted on the backside of the jug. He has a tricorn hat which makes for a pouring spout; attached to the hat is a key, which is the handle on this jug. This is the large size; pattern number D6570; part of the Williamsburg series. It is 7 ¼ inches high and 5 ½ inches wide and is in fine condition; no chips, cracks or restoration.
