This unique Italian plate is very decorative with a face in a shield held by two dragons and surrounded by leaves. The rim is a decorative border (see pix). It is hand painted in typical maiolica colors: yellow, iron red, blue, and ochre. It is tin glazed earthenware with an opaque white glaze. Italian maiolica is not the same as the later English majolica made by Minton. Later maiolica was termed faience.
I cannot tell the age of this plate but the back show a yellow crown and a yellow initial "M." and no date or the word Italy. This shows it is before the McKinley act which required imports to have the name of the country. The plate is 9-3/4" diameter.
The condition is exceptional for its age. There is a tiny place on the rim. Some rough spots are natural due to the early potting and glazing.
