This handsome English sauce tureen has three parts: the top with a removable handle, the compartment for the sauce, and the bottom for the hot water to keep the sauce warm. It could also hold ice to keep the contents cold. Old Sheffield plate was not made after 1830 when electroplating was invented. It is in remarkably good shape for its age. It has some pitting, especially in the bottom part, which I have tried to show. It has gadroon decoration and the silver is still quite bright with no bleeding of the base metal showing. The dimensions are: 8" long, 5-3/4" wide and approximately 6-1/4" high. There is no mark which is normal for old Sheffield.
