John W. Dawson was born in 1888 in Chicago. He studied with Arthur Dawson, attended the Academie Julian in Paris, and later lived in Wickford, Rhode Island, a village in North Kingstown, RI. Dawson was a member of the Providence Art Club and the South County Art Association, whose first exhibition was held in 1927 in Dawson's Wickford studio. In 1929 he became the first president of the Association, now located in Kingston.
