This 12 1/2" high sturdy vase is 7"wide across the top, 4 1/4" across the round base. The top of the base almost resembles the top of a boot, wide and tapered down to a round area. The color is the fascination: oxblood red. In traditional Chinese culture, the color red represents joy, happiness and auspiciousness. Among porcelain makers a popular saying is : "if you want to go broke, make red glaze porcelain." It is complicated, costly and many of the skills were lost and only recently revived with the help of modern technology. This color was invented by accident in the Tang dynasty (618-907) when bronze was widely used in kilns. A different firing resulted in the red, which was so rare that only the emperor was allowed to own it. You can experience this color that was once reserved for Emperors! I have many other beautiful vases listed here and will combine orders for shipping savings. Please email me with any questions you may have, and thank-you for shopping here at Something Wonderful.
