This 9 1/2" high cloisonne vase has a flared top with an opening 2 1/2" across, a round base 2 3/4" across and is 4 1/2" across at the widest point. The background color is a rich royal blue, with yellow, green, light blue, white, red...a rainbow of gorgeous colors for the flowers, leaves and geometrically designed borders. This vase was created in China in the 1920's. Cloisonne is an ancient art of both China and Japan and sometimes created by the Russians and French. The technique involves soldering very thin metal wires on to a metal base to create the design, then filling compartments within the wires with enamel before firing. The wires remain visible on the finished piece and serve to separate the various colors. A fine piece of cloisonne may take from days to months to complete, during which time one mistake could ruin the entire piece. The chrysanthemums on this vase are often used by the royal houses of Asia and represent a long life. I have a wide selection of cloisonne pieces listed here, as I have been fascinated by this art for many years.
