Here is a pair of fine porcelain potpourri or apothecary jars that were made in England at Well Street Pottery, also known as The Old Pottery Works, Stratford England. They were in Stoke on Trent. They were made by Stephen Cleve which bears his mark on the bottom of both jars. The jars are a very fine white porcelain. It is hand painted with green flora, birds of paradise and butterflies. There are also a few lady bug beetles. These were made to be together since the birds are made to face each other. The lid and foot are a more cream color with gold color colors outlining the design. The lid handles are the same color as well as the handles. The bottom has a green mark that includes a crown and a star. S & Co is printed on the top of the crown. One jar is more legible than the other. There is one condition issue. There is a faint hairline that travels from the raised dimples downward and curves for a total of two inches. This is on only one of the jars and it does not stand out. There are no other chips or cracks or repairs. There is no sign of any crazing. Both stand 7 1/2" tall with the lids on. This are a beautiful set of jars.
