Melvin Whitsett Carter was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on November 19, 1930.
Carter went to the University of Illinois, Champagne, on a scholarship. He graduated in 1963 with a BFA in Art Education.
In 1965 Carter left Illinois and headed to his new home in Denver, Colorado.
He was an Artist/Instructor for the Art Students League of Denver until his death in January 1998. During his career, Carter participated in over 70 exhibitions. He also juried many shows, as well. He was the recipient of numerous awards as both an artist and an educator.
