This is one of the most lovely veilleuses we have ever had the pleasure of offering. We recently bought part of a collection of Porcelaine de Paris circa 1880's French veilleuses from a life-long collector in France. She collected only the very best and took perfect care of them. This veilleuse measures a tad over 5" tall and was the standard size made as a toy for little girls. Real veilleuses made for adults could stand as tall as two feet high! This veilleuse is complete with all four parts: the teapot, the chimney, the lid and the lamp oil receptacle. Finding complete ones is getting very difficult. It is pristine with absolutely no flaws of any kind. It is beautifully hand-painted and unsigned. That is common for Porcelaine de Paris pieces. They were made by a collection of private studios in Paris and are easily identifiable without a signature by their exquisite quality of both the porcelain they used and the skill of the artists who did the hand painting. Veilleuses graced the nightstands of homes across France before the development of electricity. They served the dual purpose of being both a night light and a beverage warmer. A child could be read to while sipping hot chocolate, herbal tea, or honeyed milk while Papa read her a bedtime story. By the time the candle oil burned out, the child was fast asleep. So, of course little French girls had to have a veilleuse for their dolls, too! It will come double boxed.
