Looking for a showpiece chandelier which will be the center of interest in any room? This may be the chandelier for you. This is a solid brass Austrian Arts and Crafts style chandelier comprised of a ring with hammered texture and two rivited bands at the top and bottom. It as 5 stylized eagle heads around the perimeter from which 3 1/4" shade holders hang. In addition there is a 6th shade holder which hangs from the ceiling canopy.
The shades are really what make this a rare and unique piece. They were made by the European Art glass maker, Pallme Konig for The Williamson Lighting Company and marketed using the name Teplitz after the region in Europe from which they were made.
They are shown in the color plate section of the book "Early 20th Century Lighting Fixtures" by Jo Ann Thomas. This book is a re-print of a Williamson Company catalog from the turn of the 20th century.
A set of matching shades of this size is very difficult to find, especially 5 of one shade profile and another of the same colors in a different profile.
The shades are made of "clam broth" base glass with orange oil spots at the bottom, amethyst threading applied to the outside and an overall rainbow iridescence. The shades glow under ultraviolet light, which is depicted in the last shade photo, the photo of the shade in normal light precedes it.
The fixture is 32"H from the canopy to the bottom of the center shade and is 28"W to the flair of the outside shades. They have highly polished fitter rims, a characteristic of Pallme Konig/Loetz shades. They are free from cracks and other defects. The fitter rims have slight threading loss from shade screws which is normal for any antique shades of this era, these losses do not show when the shades are in the holders.
The ring is 6"H and the canopy is 7 1/4"D. The outer shades are 8"H and 5"W at the flair, The center shade is 8"H and 6"D at the widest.
