HISTORIQUE: Avon Products, Inc., was launched in the late 19th century as California Perfume Company by a traveling book salesman named David H. McConnell. While knocking on doors to sell books, he also carried his homemade perfume samples (originally rose scented). He found that the fragrances generated more interest than the books he was trying to sell.
He started selling his perfume on the road as well, and with his wide he established a perfumery in New York City in 1886. The company's new name, California Perfume Company, or CPC, was established in 1892. By 1896, the company had introduced 20 new fragrances.
In 1939, the California Perfume Company changed its name to Avon Products Inc.
