A very rare antique Schafer & Vater whiskey nipper flask from their ‘Dancers’ release, circa 1920. The figural bottle depicts a dancing couple out on the town, decked out in their best 920’s garb.

The gentleman is dressed in a black suit with short jacket and bow tie. The Lady wears a whisper pink long dress, orange heels and a soft blue headband. Front of base reads in incised black, “MATCHITCHE”.

Made of hard paste porcelain with a velvety texture. The front of the flask presents the dancers and the back depicts a wood textured tree trunk with the back of the dancer’s limbs doubling as branches. The opening porcelain capped cork plug is on the upper back.

Underside is incised with the crown and R mark, as well as “5001”.

Stands 6 1/4" tall. 3" wide to toe x 1-3/4" deep.

Virtually Mint Condition. No chips, cracks or breaks. No wear to paint or glaze. There is a small round spot of porcelain or glaze on the man’s jacket chest that feels raised. I believe it to be original to the making. Cork on closure has shrunk with the years and it looks like long ago someone wrapped some tape around it for a snugger fit.

HISTORIQUE: Gustav Schaefer and Guenther Vater founded the Schaefer & Vater Porcelain Factory in Volkstedt Rudolstad, Thuringa, Germany in 1890. They produced a wide range of hard paste porcelain including luxury items, figurines, and dolls' heads. They produced many figural liquor bottles for distribution by pubs.

A hallmark of this pottery is the fine texture of the clay used in production. Mined locally, it was rich with kaolin and this resulted in a product with a velvety texture and very fine grain.

Schafer & Vater were perhaps best known for their comical and figural items. They manufactured these in teapots, jugs, creamers, bottles, match strikers, and planters, with a backstamp impressed with the crown and R mark. 'Made in Germany' was sometimes stamped in black.

Many Schafer & Vater pieces were unmarked. Connoisseurs will recognize them, though, due to their characteristic and unique craftsmanship and design.
