Beautiful antique solid heavyweight copper plate with an elaborate repousse and chased flora design with flowers and leaves in high relief. The flowers are framed by geometric star points that are chased with varying designs. The edge is a rope design. It measures 13 inches diameter and is unsigned. It has the original hanger. The plate has a warm patina. Condition is pristine.
This plate came from a South Dakota Scandinavian estate and its origin is unknown. It is a fabulous example of fine metal work.
Repoussé is a metalworking technique in which metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. Chasing is the opposite technique to repoussé and is used to refine the design on the front of the work by sinking the metal. The two are used in conjunction to create a finished piece.
