Purchased in a good shop in Hong Kong in the late 1960’s.
The pendant measures 2 inches across. The cord is adjustable from 14 to 22 inches long.
It is in excellent condition. Of high quality and beautifully carved.
The fine workmanship makes this beauty wearable Asian art.
HISTORY: Cinnabar lacquer ware, an ancient art form, is created by the application of coats of lacquer onto a foundation. Up to 500 coats of lacquer can be applied, depending on the artwork being created. Each coat must dry completely before the next is applied. Then a highly skilled artisan carves ornate designs into the lacquer.
The name of the mineral called cinnabar is the natural occurring form of vermilion. Originally, the mineral was ground into a pigment and added to lacquer to achieve the deep red color.
Cinnabar or vermilion was associated with two of mankind's great desires: to get rich and to live forever.
