HISTORIQUE: One of Lou Reed's lasting legacies -- besides founding The Velvet Underground and introducing the world to the depths of feedback loops -- will forever be his impact on the way the world sees bananas.
The banana cover is, of course, the artwork of Andy Warhol, who crafted the image and placed it on the cover of his pet band's first record in 1967. The original album cover invited the owner to "PEEL SLOWLY AND SEE”, allowing fans to peel back the banana skin as a sticker, revealing the fruit of a nude-colored banana underneath. Not many survived unpeeled.
Warhol served as the manager and patron saint of the now iconic art rock band. Alas, the record was hardly a commercial success. It was only in the decades after VU's breakup that the band became a cult favorite, transforming their vintage peel-off sticker album into a rare collector's item and a symbol for the proto-punk genre.
The Velvet Underground and Nico is considered the holy grail of rock music around the world. The album has achieved many honors since its release. The release earned the original band a slot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone placed it No. 13 on the list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in November 2003, dubbing it “the most prophetic rock album ever made.” The Observer placed it number 1 in 50 Albums that Changed the World. Uncut placed it at number 1 of 100 Greatest Debut Albums and it placed in the top 10 of Mojo’s 100 Greatest albums Ever Made.
Spin magazine placed it on the top of its list of the “Top 15 Most Influential Albums of All Time”. It is one of 225 recordings in the prestigious Library of Congress National Recording Registry.
ANDY WARHOL (1928-1987) was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture, and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. Warhol challenged preconceived notions about the nature of art and erased traditional distinctions between fine art and popular culture. His banana image is recognized as one of the ten most famous pop art paintings by the pre-eminent pop artist. The value of Andy Warhol art continues to soar.
