HISTORY: For those who collect couture neckties the Jim Thompson name is well known; for those who don't recognize the brand, it is the finest Thai silk and is known worldwide.

Jim Thompson was an American, a graduate of Princeton, an artist, an ex-architect, a spy during WWII, a silk merchant and a renowned collector of fine antiquities (mostly amassed after he went to Thailand).

He was the businessman who after the war, helped revitalize the Thai silk industry when he founded the Thai Silk Company in 1948 and introduced Thai silk to the world.

With a vision for producing Thai silk of the finest quality, he structured the company in a cottage industry model, raising thousands of Thailand's poorest people out of poverty. His determination to keep his company cottage-based was significant for the women who made up the bulk of his work force. By allowing them to work at home, they retained their position in the household while becoming breadwinners.

The ultimate mystery surrounding his disappearance remains unsolved today. He vanished on an Easter Sunday afternoon in 1967 while visiting a friend's country house. After exhaustive searches, massive reward offers, an international investigation – there was nary a clue.

His commitment to producing the finest of silks while improving the well-being of the workers never wavered.
