SAINT LAURENT YVES / France (1936-2008) – Born in Algeria, Yves Saint Laurent first gained recognition in fashion circles when he won a competition in 1954; the following year he was hired to work alongside CHRISTIAN DIOR. After Dior`s death Saint Laurent became the couture house`s chief designer at the age 21.
His first collection was the “Trapeze” line, which represented a controversial departure from the typically feminine silhouette of Dior`s pieces. In 1962 Saint Laurent founded his own couture hous.
Other innovations included his “Mondrian” dresses in 1965 followed by feminine variations on tuxedo jacket and safari suits in the 1970s.
Saint Laurent continued to be a leading designer until his death in 2008.
