A rare and stunningly beautiful Ruyi Scepter made from rosewood, a rare and valuable hardwood. The scepter is masterfully carved and features intricately carved open work in a design of crowned bats and low relief Chinese Immortals. There is a center medallion carved in the cloud shaped ‘head’.
A Ruyi Scepter is a curved decorative object that is a ceremonial scepter in Chinese Buddhism or a talisman symbolizing power and good fortune in Chinese folklore. A traditional ruyi has a long gently S-shaped handle and a head fashioned like a fist, cloud, or lingzhi mushroom.
Rosewood is a very heavy hardwood, meaning it is one of the few types of wood that sinks in water. It also grows at an incredibly slow pace; it takes a tree 300 years to produce a piece of wood five inches thick. It is rare and valuable.
This piece was purchased in Shanghai in the early 1920’s and brought to the U.S. in 1925. I expect that it was not new when purchased, but do not know its actual age.
The ruyi scepter measures 15.5 inches in length by 4.25 inches wide by 2 inches height (39.5 cm by 10.8 cm by 5.1 cm).
It is in beautiful condition without damage, wear or repair. Beautiful dark honey hued wood. Masterful carving.
A rare and fine collector’s piece, it would make a superb addition to any Ruyi collection or Buddhism art and artifacts, or Chinese art collection in general.
