The front cover board bears a fantastic design by the beloved illustrator Paul Souze. The text is written by Jean de Nivelle. It was published in Paris, Rue Palatine in 1889.
This red toile French binding has a cover board bearing a glorious design which is embossed in gilt and silver. The illustration presents fish, sailboats, swirling vines and tomatoes, all of which play a part in the stories inside. A charming schoolboy sits at the center, clutching his beloved book. The binding has a gilt title plate on the spine and a black embossed medallion at the center back. The page edges of the text are gilt tipped.
The French text is easily read by an intermediate student. It is illustrated with the most charming vignettes, both full page and vignette.
The binding measures: 10" x 8" x 1". It is in very good antique condition with amazingly little wear.
