Antique Nineteenth Century Amethyst Glass Tall Casket Box with Enamel Flowers
The color of this very elegant box is just ravishing. It originates from Paris (from the estate of Madame "X"......many estate auctions in France use this type of anonymous initial to protect the dignity of the family) and dates towards 1890.
The hand blown glass thick and lovely. The top and bottom of the box are fixed with fine brass mounts. There is an "S" shaped clasp and a solid hinge to close and open the box. The lid has a lighthearted design of enamel flowers which almost appear as snowflakes. The enamel work is very fine, with the top of the lid adorned with a central gold and white six point star. Stylized white enamel stars and gold flowers float around the center star. The side edge has a lovely scallop pattern which is created by tiny white dots. White flowers are placed under each upward curve.
The box measures; 3 1/2" tall, 2 1/2" in diameter, 2 3/8" deep. It is in very good antique condition: no chips or cracks to the glass (this is hand blown glass with bubbles and irregularities as is typical) the brass mounts can be polished, (we chose to leave them with the original patina). The enamel design is clear and complete.
When placed in the light the color is just incredible. It is a spectacular antique from the estate of a mysterious Parisian lady.
